Another Hollywood remake…

As you will see from previous posts, I have a bit of a distaste for Hollywood remakes of Asian horror films. Whilst recently reading my favourite horror zineFangoria I discovered there has been a remake of ‘A Tale of Two Sisters’, which I think is one of the best asian horror flicks ever! The reviewer Michael Gingold is not a fan of the the original and gave the new film quite a favourable review. He critiques the original as being slow and was unhappy with the “stultifying artfulness”. Which to those of you familiar with ‘A Tale of Two Sisters’, the beauty of the film is its slow burn into twists and creeps, keeping the viewer never sure as to the boundaries of what is real. Gingold praises the new film for being ’straightforward’, which is my problem with these remakes. They reduce what are highly crafted story telling to simplistic cheap thrills, bashing out horror convention with a hammer, unlike the well executed scares of the originals.

    I must agree with you. A lot of critics don’t fully appreciate asian horror. in asian films it seems that there’s a ghost….because theres a fucking ghost. In USA we have to have a reason for the ghost otherwise we don’t pay attention, which makes most of the movie a cheap set up for a storyline meaning they have to put stupid cheap trills in “like a cat meowing out of nowhere or a scary sound”.
