I can’t stand it! Someone reach for a fan and anything that can calm me down I’m overstimulated. Thanks to the crew at First Showing (and others) it appears the teaser trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland has leaked earlier than expected. I am so excited I have watched it four times already! As a special aside to this glorious event, for those who love all things Burton check out his new website where you can enjoy his work led around by none other than the mighty Stain Boy!

True Blood horror or soft porn?

Unless you’ve been trapped in a basement, coffin or are recently re-animated you will be familiar with HBO’s hit vampire series True Blood. Season 2 is ramping up the action with some new story arch’s introducing us to more beasties such as shape shifters and evangelical militant Christian’s.
However along with the supernatural beasts we have also seen an amping up of a different type of action… that’s right just when you thought you hadn’t seen Sookie’s (Anna Paquin) breasts enough, they have been appearing more and more often and she is not alone in her mammary exposure. We’ve seen Tara’s (Rutina Wesley), those of miscellaneous Bon Temps townsfolk and the men have been nuding up as well. We have seen random ‘moobs’ and plenty of naked arses; my personal favourite being Eggs (Mehcad Brooks) with a special mention to hometown favourite Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten). Now those of you who are regular readers would know by now, I don’t mind a bit of raunch. But the most recent episode has called into question the place of said raunch.
I was recently asked about the new season as the person had heard that it had lost its edge and was basically soft porn. I vehemently replied in the negative, saying that the series was venturing into new supernatural areas with the shape shifter plot line and also exposing the audience to the Vampire hierarchy as we find out more about Eric North and his relationship with the Sheriff’s from other regions, specifically Dallas.
Unfortunately this latest episode has caused me to take pause and reflect on the role of the raunch within the True Blood series. I counted approximately five, yes five incidents of women going the cock grab. Now I’m all for sisters going in and grabbing some junk, if feminism has taught us anything its that we have the right to grope and grope we will. Of those molestations, those of which that were pertinent to the plot… two?
So is the series crossing the line from horror raunch to soft porn? We will have to wait and see, this was only one episode and it seemed to be trying to tie in too many story arch’s at once, which resulted in a confusion of titillation in more ways than one.

‘Book of Blood’ skin crawling scares…

Happily skipping around the interwebs I stumbled upon this little ruby of a trailer thanks to Dread Central. Clive Barker who penned such modern horror tales as Candyman and The Midnight Meat Train, which were both turned into films. The later starring she of the most stunning eyebrows in Hollywood Brooke Shields… Eyebrows aside, we now have the Barker’s story the Book of Blood being brought to our screens.
To be honest, I really had no interest in Meat Train, however the premise for Book of Blood I do find interesting. A paranormal investigator, looking into an apparently haunted house, recruits a psychic young man to assist her inquiries. They discover the house is more than it seems and that the dead communicate through the young man by writing messages upon his flesh. Think of The Pillow Book, but without Ewan McGregor’s full frontal nudity (ahhh memories), and a hell of a lot more ghosts and evil.
The trailer is a little gruesome, however also appears to have some good supernatural effects. I think if you can get past the whole writing on flesh thing… Now, come on, its just a few scratches! The supernatural themes within this flick could provide some good scares.
