Hoffine will send chills down your spine… or blood if you are in the way!

Greetings and Salutations.

Reading through a couple of horror mags the other week, I came across the artist Joshua Hoffine. So I contacted this fine gentleman and asked if I could feature his work on this here blog, of which he kindly agreed.

Hoffine expresses his horror vision through the medium of photography. His work is chilling, challenging and at times elegant. His placing of bodies and the images he creates portray a world of horror that’s reality based. However also plays on the irrational fears that we all hold in our psyche and expands this in his work to portray these fears in an amplified conceptualisation.

Hoffine describes his perspective on the basis of his work as follows:

“I love old Disney cartoons. I like the hyper-realism of animation, and the overblown production values of Hollywood movies. I want my images to be pretty so you’ll look at them longer. I am interested in the science of fairy tales. I want to reinvent archetypes. I embrace the Jungian power of the cliche. I think of my photgra[hy as pieces of candy.

I believe that the horror story is ultimately concerned with the imminence and randomness of death, and the implication that there is no certainty to existence. The experience of horror resides in this confrontation with uncertainty. Horror tells us that our belief in security is delusional., and that the monsters are all around us.”

Hoffine’s work is a crisp and visceral trip through the potential horror in our lives, however also manages to have a dark sense of whimsy. Below are some examples of his work, please visit his site to see more, you will be deliciously disturbed.
