New Moon… Soft Porn but for whom?
Posted by Ms Harker | Filed under Horror Films, Horror Reading
Greetings and Salutations.
I saw New Moon yesterday (ducks for cover from BJ-C). As I am a believer in fairness, in that I don’t think its fair to give something a thumping unless you have seen it. I have read all the Twilight books and have now seen both the films.
Now there is some conjecture as to whether Twilight counts as horror, putting that aside, I still believe that the whole Twilight phenomenon may result in some coming across to the dark side as the books will spark an interest in the horror genre. However in watching the film, which I have to say is better than the first, I began to wonder who in fact is the target audience for New Moon?
As I sat, trying to keep and open mind as Bella mooched about barely changing her facial expression, Edward sparkled and also mooched about barely changing his facial expression. I sat with my fingers crossed when Bella cut herself that Jasper wold in fact chomp down on her neck and snap it, then Jacob Black entered with his wolf pack. Padding about Forkes in nothing but their cut off jeans, shorts, whatever and sneakers, nubile and buff chests out for the world to see (often moist, in the rain)… Ms Harker, I thought, you strumpet, these lads are not of age, stop perving! So I managed to contain my oggling to the oldest wolf of the pack Sam and felt less guilty.
However my confusion, which lets face it, I don’t usually have any issue objectifying the masculine delights within our genre, was further compounded when I came across the website ‘Aussie Twilight Mums‘. This website apparently acts as a hub for the more mature woman to express her love for Twilight and its leading men. One of the women from the website was interviewed on TV (yes that is the state of Australian commercial news) defending her love for Edward as he is actually one hundred and something years old, not seventeen. Rejecting any pedophilic undertones to her questioner!
My question to you dear readers is this: who are the Twilight films really for? Are they to encourage the youth of today to remain chaste, marry your local vampire before you have any type of coitus like activities or are they soft porn for Mum’s who don’t want to go to their local sex shop and buy the good stuff?

The front lad is the eldest, just to save confusion!

Again with the chest out!

November 29th, 2009 at 12:41 pmI haven’t read/seen anything Twilight save for the parodies, but I do agree that horror fans are way too quick to the punch. I assumed the audience was 14 year old girls, although I do have plenty of 20-30something friends who argue about Jacob and Edward. I’m not offended by the phenomen, I just assume it has nothing whatsoever to do with me.

November 29th, 2009 at 12:52 pmAs with you, I keep from too much Twilight bashing as I haven’t seen the films myself. It would be easy to take shots at it, but I would be a disservice to myself as a film fan to do so when I haven’t even seen it. I do plan on one day watching and reviewing the films, fairly, just out of horror civic duty. Or something.
So, as for your question as to who these films are made for? I would guess younger girls, which is fine and older women can enjoy the romance of it all I guess too. One thing that really tickles me improper, is one thing you hit on here…women in their 20’s, 30’s, and so on getting all hot over the KIDS that are in this film! Seriously?
That wolf guy, Jacob is only 16 from what I know and I cannot believe how many grown women I hear saying how hot he is and how they want to bone him! He’s fucking 16!! I thought men were supposed to be the pigs (and we are) in this department! I’m happy that you brought this subject up as it has been grating at me for some time.
Oh, by the way, my dad called from ‘83…he wants his cut off jeans back from the werewolves!

November 29th, 2009 at 12:53 pmThanks for dropping by Emily. I have major issues with Meyer’s messing with the Vampire mythology, however the Aussie Twilight Mum’s thing is hilarious yet disturbing!

November 29th, 2009 at 1:38 pmOMG the he’s 100 years old thing so it’s ok is the funniest thing EVER. I find that Twilight is usually reserved for horny women and teenagers or women who are lacking love, a spark, or a good man (or woman?) to come home to. I suppose it just comes down to the entertainment factor.

December 1st, 2009 at 12:19 amMs. Harker,
It’s hard not to perv out when the New Moon werewolves are trying so hard to be eye candy. I think Twilight films are for the repressed virgin in all 13 year old girls (and women, like the one who showed up on TV, who think like 13 year old girls).
Jacob and the wolf pack’s sexual posturing reminds me of the work of David Decoteau and thier bare chests and pumped biceps would be right at home in a film like “beastly Boyz”

January 8th, 2010 at 4:28 amLol I just found this article now. I’ve read all the books and seen the movies and am proud to say that I am a firm anti twilighter.
You asked what age the movies are aimed at and I think they were supposed to be for girls in their late teens. What’s scary though is ever since the movie came out kids have been reading and watching it. I was standing in the bookshop one day and two little girls came along and said “look they’re the books mummy bought us!”.
I think the most worrying thing though is breaking Dawn. There is sex in that book not to mention teenage marriage and teen pregnancy. What a great role model huh.
