New Moon… Soft Porn but for whom?

Greetings and Salutations.

I saw New Moon yesterday (ducks for cover from BJ-C). As I am a believer in fairness, in that I don’t think its fair to give something a thumping unless you have seen it. I have read all the Twilight books and have now seen both the films.

Now there is some conjecture as to whether Twilight counts as horror, putting that aside, I still believe that the whole Twilight phenomenon may result in some coming across to the dark side as the books will spark an interest in the horror genre. However in watching the film, which I have to say is better than the first, I began to wonder who in fact is the target audience for New Moon?

As I sat, trying to keep and open mind as Bella mooched about barely changing her facial expression, Edward sparkled and also mooched about barely changing his facial expression. I sat with my fingers crossed when Bella cut herself that Jasper wold in fact chomp down on her neck and snap it, then Jacob Black entered with his wolf pack. Padding about Forkes in nothing but their cut off jeans, shorts, whatever and sneakers, nubile and buff chests out for the world to see (often moist, in the rain)… Ms Harker, I thought, you strumpet, these lads are not of age, stop perving! So I managed to contain my oggling to the oldest wolf of the pack Sam and felt less guilty.

However my confusion, which lets face it, I don’t usually have any issue objectifying the masculine delights within our genre, was further compounded when I came across the website  ‘Aussie Twilight Mums‘. This website apparently acts as a hub for the more mature woman to express her love for Twilight and its leading men. One of the women from the website was interviewed on TV (yes that is the state of Australian commercial news) defending her love for Edward as he is actually one hundred and something years old, not seventeen. Rejecting any pedophilic undertones to her questioner!

My question to you dear readers is this: who are the Twilight films really for? Are they to encourage the youth of today to remain chaste, marry your local vampire before you have any type of coitus like activities or are they soft porn for Mum’s who don’t want to go to their local sex shop and buy the good stuff?

Good Trailer, Bad Trailer: The Wolfman and The Bleeding.

Greetings and Salutations.

So just to rub our nose in it like naughty little lycanthrope’s that have piddled on the rug. Anther fabulous trailer courtesy of the folks at First Showing has come out for the impending (waiting, waiting, waiting) release of ‘The Wolfman‘ starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins. It again has a wonderful gothic feel to it and gives some greater insight into the relationship between Del Toro and Hopkins characters. It also shows some more grisly scenes from those wicked medical types doing tests on the poor Wolfman, ice shock bath anyone?

However with the release of good must come a balance in the force with the release of utter rubbish.  Shock Til You Drop featured today a trailer for a film entitled ‘The Bleeding’. Starring some chap that looks like the “special” adopted out twin of Vin Diesel and ex-soccer star come film thug Vinnie Jones is headed to hopefully the bog of eternal stench and will never darken my screen with its excretions.  Honestly at first I couldn’t figure out if they were taking the piss or if in fact they were intentionally urinating over all past quality vampire films, books, mythology with this poor excuse for a horror film.

Compare the two for yourself ladies and gents.

‘Wolf Man’ has horror hounds howling!

I was intending on keeping my luscious lips shut about the release of the ‘The Wolf Man‘ trailer (thanks to Bloody-Disgusting for the video below). One, I haven’t seen the original and two I’ve been on a vampire binge of late. However my fellow bloggers (see Monster Land and The Vault of Horror) seem to have their panties in a little bit of a twist in regards to the CGI being used to transform the fabulous Benicio Del Toro from man to wolf.

Now I will probably cop a serve for this but… lighten up bitches! I thought the transformation looked great, Del Toro has the acting chops to display the pain and anguish of becoming the beast; which without said talent would render make up or CGI effects to something you put in little plastic bags when your walking your wolf in the park.

The atmosphere appears to be suitably gothic and we all know by now how much I love seeing a bit of ye olde psychiatry in horror films. Anthony Hopkins makes another appearance as a slightly mad supernatural sage, which is reminiscent of his role as Van Helsing in ‘Bram Stokers Dracula‘. Its Hopkins people, he’s a knight and can do no wrong in my eyes (except that weird film about the New Zealander who raced across the desert in a go-cart)!

‘The Wolf Man’ has the potential to make amends for any ‘New Moon‘ bollocks we will have to endure in the coming months, so suck it up and rejoice ye merry gentlemen and lassies, Werewolves for grown ups are coming!
