No, not a Rom-Zom, a ‘Political Zomedy’ fabulous!

The latest film to be listed for the line up of the 2010 After Dark Horrorfest is of the Zombie persuasion. ‘Zombies of Mass Destruction’ has made the cut and according to the press release it chomps down on stereotypes and braiiinnss of course;

“The film is set in “ZMD,” a conservative island community that’s under attack. Port Gamble, Washington is being overrun with brain eaters, and the people seem powerless to stave them off. A rag tag band of rebels led by Frida (Janette Armand), an Iranian college student suspected of being an Iraqi terrorist, and Tom (Doug Fahl), a gay business man who has returned to town with his partner to come out to his mother, tries to turn the tide and push the invading hoards of undead back.”

This flick appears to have some great ghoulish effects, meandering undead, political incorrectness and a dysfunctional father son relationship based of a difference of being a ‘Zombie’ or a Vampire’ man. Fangtastic! Check out the movies website here. Check out the political zombie carnage laden trailer below (courtesy of Shock Til You Drop).

Life Imitates Horror: Zombie Dad

Just when you thought the pustule coloured tsunami of Zombie related books, film and merchandise couldn’t saturate your braaain any more. Like a an undead arm coming out of its socket out pops this unsavoury tale of cannibalistic mayhem from Bakersfield, California.

A thirty four year old father was accused in May 2009 of chewing out his son’s eye (and injuring the other with a chomp) in an alleged  PCP (Phencyclidine) fueled zombiesque romp which ended in the man attempting to cut off his own leg with an axe, when obviously his hunger for human flesh was still unsatisfied. Now ask yourself people, has the Zombie trend gone too far? Are we seeing the impact of an over saturation of Zombie material infecting the brains of the general populace resulting in these types of acts. What ever happened to a good old vampire like nibble on the neck during a maniacal sex romp between consenting adults?

However, the poor child’s statement to police will make for good telemovie if not feature film fodder… I can see the scene now, Tom Hanks the hardened alcoholic District Attorney, whose been given the case of the ‘Zombie Dad’, as his co-workers won’t touch it. But Hank’s the hardened attorney, has had his heart won over by the blind chewed up boy and puts him on the stand… The victory music starts to play as the Hank’s asks the young boy ‘What did you tell the police when they arrived son?’… pause for dramatic effect… ‘My daddy ate out my eyes.’… pause for dramatic effect… Hanks: ‘Ladies and gentlmen of the jury, my daddy ate out my eyes, my daddy ate out my eyes… the public rests.’ Zombie dad hangs head in shame, judge slams down gavel and shouts ‘Guilty as charged!’, Hanks and the blind boy high five each other… roll credits.

Deadgirl: confirmation adolescent boys are inherently evil.

If I took away one thing from viewing the film ‘Deadgirl‘ it’s that adolescent boys are sex crazed, morally bankrupt and inherently evil! A little while ago I posted about my anticipation for this morbid teenage indie corpse ride… Praying to the dark gods that this would be the film that would deliver our decaying minds, our rotting intelligence from the ever pervasive Twilight twaddle; and low and behold this film has game!

Decrepit, skin crawling sexually depraved game, but game none the less. The Indie pop soundtrack very reminiscent of that used by Sofia Copola in ‘The Virgin Suicides‘ or ‘Lost in Translation‘ is hypnotic and lulls the viewer almost into a trance like state as the horror of the acts before you start to unfold. I found the soundtrack almost desensitized me at times from the heinous decisions made by the twisted adolescent beasts, until towards the end when our apparent heroe steps up to the plate.

“Daringly original and genre-busting, Deadgirl is an odyssey into the soul of our alienated youth that takes the conventions of the horror and coming-of-age movies and turns them on their heads.
When high school misfits Rickie and JT decide to ditch school and find themselves lost in the crumbling facility of a nearby abandoned hospital, they come face-to-face with a gruesome discovery: a body of a woman stripped naked, chained to a table and covered in plastic and soon realize she is anything but dead. Quickly the boys find themselves embarking on a twisted yet poignant journey testing the limits of their friendship, and forces both to decide just how far they’re willing to stretch their understanding of right and wrong.” (Amazon.com, Product Description)

The film starts off slow, takes place in a steamy summer, featuring a couple of adolescent males without much else to do but drink beer and graffiti abandoned mental asylums. However once our Deadgirl enters the picture the film begins to expose the adolescent pain of exclusion and isolation, first love and of finding one’s place even if it is inside the corpse of an undead naked chick.  The film escalates to a satisfying vicious ending for those characters that you want to cop a chomp from the very beginning, however provides the viewer with an unexpected twist; all to the soothing tunes of indie pop in the summer sun!

Deadgirl is out on DVD and showing at selected film festivals, well worth a view, and a chilling reminder as to why I never became a high-school teacher!
